Application of self aligning ball bearing

Two types of self aligning bearings:

Cylindrical hole and tapered hole, cage made of steel plate, synthetic resin, etc. Its characteristics are the outer ring raceway for the spherical, with automatic alignment function, can compensate for the error caused by the misalignment and shaft deflection, but the relative inner and outer ring tilt should not exceed 3 degrees.

Self aligning bearing are ideal for applications where misalignment between shaft and housing is a problem. Due to their design, self-aligning ball bearings can withstand misalignments of up to 3° without increasing the amount of friction and the frictional heat generated. However, due to the relatively small contact angle of these bearings, the axial load carrying capacity is not as high as, for example, angular contact bearings. These bearings can handle both static and dynamic misalignments. Sealed self-aligning ball bearings also protect it from dust and other contaminants. Spherical ball bearings can be used in many different areas such as mining, food processing and mass production applications such as the textile industry.

Self aligning ball bearings consist of an outer ring, an inner ring, rolling elements, a cage to accommodate the rolling elements and a seal to protect the balls from contaminants and other dirt.

  • Outer ring: The outer ring of the bearing has a smooth spherical surface and no raceways. The shape of the outer ring allows for slight movement within the bearing, thus enabling the bearing to be self-aligning.
  • Inner ring: The inner ring of spherical bearings has two raceways to keep the balls and cage in place.
  • Rolling body and cage: The rolling body on a spherical ball bearing is held in place by the cage and inner ring. Friction and frictional heat are very low due to the loose structure between the balls and the inner and outer rings. Cages are usually made of stamped steel, PA66, reinforced glass fibre or machined brass.
  • Sealing: Sealed self-aligning ball bearings ensure that dust and other contaminants do not affect the rolling elements of the bearing.

Spherical roller bearings are suitable for heavy loads at low rotational speeds, while spherical ball bearings are suitable for light loads at high rotational speeds.
